OBJECTIVE.Our goal was to determine whether the third ventricle is significantly enlarged among neonates with trisomy 21, compared with infants without clinical signs of trisomy 21. This enlargement might be related to hypoplasia of the structures surrounding the third ventricle. Enlargement of the Third Ventricle in affective disorders

INTRODUCTION There have been inconsistent reports of dilation of the third ventricle (lll-V) in bipolar disorder. Within the lateral walls of lll-V are hypothalamic nuclei which mediate the neuroendocrine, sleep, appetite and autonomic disturbances which characterise a depressive episode. METHODS The lll-V width, immediately anterior to the mamillary bodies, was measured in 74 bipolar I or II...

Lymphocyte respiration in children with Trisomy 21

BACKGROUND This study measured lymphocyte mitochondrial O(2) consumption (cellular respiration) in children with trisomy 21. METHODS Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were isolated from whole blood of trisomy 21 and control children and these cells were immediately used to measure cellular respiration rate. [O(2)] was determined as a function of time from the phosphorescence decay rates (1/τ...
